Prosthodontics

The branch of dentistry is concerned with the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth such as bridges and dentures and also other parts of the mouth.

Crowns, also known as caps, are used to repair teeth that are severely damaged or decayed. A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire tooth above the gum line, protecting it from further damage and restoring its shape and function. Crowns are usually made from porcelain, ceramic, or metal and require two or more visits to the dentist’s office to complete.

Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) that are anchored to the adjacent teeth with crowns. Bridges are custom-made to match the color and shape of the patient’s natural teeth and can restore the patient’s ability to chew, speak, and smile.
